An important design from the Eames office, the aluminum group was created to solve a problem identified by Alexander Girard while he was working with Eero Saarinen on the Miller house in Columbus, Indiana. Girard was looking for a beautiful chair which could serve equally well indoors or outside.

Charles and Ray developed a chair with an aluminum frame and a sling seat which would be impervious to the elements. They also created an upholstred version for indoor use. This vintage example has a seat of olive green naugahyde and a headrest of black Girard hopsack.
