A compelling sculpture that is also a functional lamp, this "Lantern" by Iowa artist James Bearden (b. 1964) has an overall rectangular form, which is comprised of his signature "Cathedral Series" dense, layered shapes. The bottom half is more opaque than the top half, and has a hinged door to access the interior. 
 
It was created so a light source could be placed inside, either a can of flammable gel or a lamp illuminating the sculpture within and casting beautiful shadows in the space it occupies.
